A woman whose purse was allegedly stolen at a playground in Punggol Central said that the thief has owned up to his misdeed.

Stomper Nora (not her real name) earlier shared how her purse had been stolen by a teenager at a playground near Horizon Primary School on August 5, between 4pm and 5pm.

The purse contained $1,690, which was part of a sum that the 27-year-old single mother of five kids received as financial assistance

Nora alleged that a teenager had, on the pretext of asking her for directions, stolen her purse while she was distracted. She subsequently lodged a police report.
The police confirmed with Stomp on August 10 that a report was lodged and investigations are ongoing.

Nora, who is unemployed, emphasised in her Stomp appeal on Aug 12 that she was not looking for sympathy and just wanted the culprit to be found.

Hours after the Stomp report, Nora said she received the following message from a woman who identified herself as the culprit's mother and a neighbour staying at the same block.

The woman claimed she had found Nora's purse under her son's pillow and that all the cash had been spent.

The woman begged Nora not to make a police report as her son was still schooling. She promised to pay Nora back $100 every month and said her family was not wealthy too.

"U have son and i m sure u will do ani thing for ur son not go jail (sic)," the woman texted Nora.

Nora told Stomp: "I had been reading the negative comments on my appeal and it really hurt my feelings. Some said it was a scam and that I was trying my luck.

"It was so heartbreaking to see the comments and I felt badly affected. I can't believe that there are still so many of such people."

Many netizens were sceptical about similarities between Nora's case and that of another Stomper who received over $15,000 in donations after she lost cash of $1,900 earlier this month.

Nora added: "My intention from the start was just to look for witnesses for my case for for the culprit to be caught. I did not want any financial sympathy and was not asking for donations. I believe in God's will.

"I am already depressed with my current situation. Yet this is another phase that I have to go through, reading all those nasty comments. Even though I am anonymous, I still felt the heartbreak when some people said those bad things.

"The pain is too painful to bear. I have to face my children each and every day and force myself to be strong.

"For those wondering, yes, I'm the type that prefers using cash. I was scammed before and all my money in my bank was gone in a blink of an eye. It's traumatic for me to keep even a single cent in my bank.

"Nonetheless, I considered this case closed. I do have sympathy for the boy and I am doing this for this mother who is pleading for her son."

Nora said she met up with the culprit and his mother on Saturday morning (Aug 13). They returned her purse — with its contents gone.

Nora recounted: "I got my purse back but it was empty.

"The boy admitted to what he did and I decided to give him a chance. He apologised and told me he regretted it. They also promised to pay me back as soon as possible. I will contact the police and ask if I can drop the case.

"I feel relieved that there is some sort of closure. Although I couldn't get back the amount I lost, I still feel blessed that my five children are with me. We have been struggling so much after that incident and I feel grateful to have such understanding children.

"Money can be replaced or even come from anywhere, but not our children. I may not be rich like some of you. But I still have a heart.

"I did grieve and almost got into depression after I lost everything, especially after reading all the nasty comments. But God has opened my heart to forgive and let this be a lesson for me too.

"Thank you for reading and I'm sure the story posted on Stomp had somehow helped me too.

"I may be penniless now and don't have anything to sustain my coming days but I pity the boy's mother more as they are more needy than me. Money is not important anymore now, as long as I have some sort of closure."

Does anyone know what sort of financial assistance program gives so much hard cash for a low income family? The article says the $1,690 is only "part of" what she got from the scheme so I presume the actual amounts received is larger than that...

I was always under the impression our social welfare benefits are meagre and even when given, the majority of them tend to be in the form of vouchers, subsidies and consumable items rather than hard cash.

PAP's money where got so easy to get?

First off they will never give out such a large amount and second even if they do, usually most of it will be in voucher, subsidies or CPF top-ups and not cash because they know there is a high risk cash might end up in someone else's cigarette or Toto ticket.

For e.g. WIS is one of the most generous government welfare scheme, even then it only pays $1k+ p.a. and 60% - 90% is in the form of CPF contributions and only a few hundred bucks in cash.

Haha, that's the $1690 question we are all trying to figure out here...

Boy who stole purse containing $1,690 belonging to single mum of 5 confesses, returns empty purse but promises to pay back $100 monthly

The money taken from her by the boy was what she received from the Social Service Office (SSO)'s financial assistance, as she is unemployed and needs to take care of her baby who has separation anxiety.

A teenage boy who is said to have taken the purse of a woman at a playground in Punggol on Aug 5 has allegedly apologised and promised to pay her back.

Aided by his mother, the boy confessed to his misdeed, saying that he regretted having taken the woman’s purse, which contained $1,690.

Because the money has already been spent, Ms Nora, the 27-year-old single mum of five to whom the purse belonged, told crowdsourced news site Stomp that the boy and his mum promised to pay back $100 monthly as they are not well off either.
Ms Nora added that she will be reaching out to the police to ask if the case she filed after the theft can be dropped.

She had been at a Punggol Central playground on Aug 5 with her children when a boy, whom she described as being between 13 and 15 years old, asked her for directions to Punggol Bus Interchange.

Before talking to the boy, she had placed her purse in her stroller bag, which was hanging from the stroller.

The money taken from her was what she received from the Social Service Office (SSO)’s financial assistance, which she described as $1,690 in denominations of $50.

The theft was devastating for Ms Nora, who is unemployed because she needs to take care of her baby, who has separation anxiety.

The money stolen from her “was the only income I had to sustain my family’s monthly expenses. I am now left with $0 in my bank,” she told Stomp, adding, “That day, I sat down in front of my house door and cried my heart out while thinking back about the high possibility that the boy had stolen my purse. I remembered how he ran off quickly.”

She shared her story with Stomp, which published it on Aug 12, in the hopes of finding the culprit and getting her money back.
After the story was published, a woman who said she was the boy’s mother reached out to Ms Nora, saying she found the purse under her son’s pillow, but there was no money left.

She texted Ms Nora, saying, “U have son and I’m sure u will do anything for ur son not go jail.”

And while some netizens commenting on the original Stomp story have been suspicious that Ms Nora may have been trying to appeal for sympathy or financial aid, she said she just wanted the thief to be caught.

The unkind comments have been hard for Ms Nora, who is already in a tight financial situation.

When the boy and his mum came forward with apologies, however, she was ready to forgive and move on.

“I considered this case closed. I do have sympathy for the boy and I am doing this for this mother who is pleading for her son,” she told Stomp, adding that on Aug 13, the boy and his mum returned her empty purse.

“The boy admitted to what he did and I decided to give him a chance. He apologised and told me he regretted it. They also promised to pay me back as soon as possible. I will contact the police and ask if I can drop the case.

I feel relieved that there is some sort of closure. Although I couldn’t get back the amount I lost, I still feel blessed that my five children are with me. We have been struggling so much after that incident and I feel grateful to have such understanding children.

I may be penniless now and don’t have anything to sustain my coming days but I pity the boy’s mother more as they are needier than me. Money is not important anymore now, as long as I have some sort of closure.” /TISG
