Not the first of May or a call for help, but the Tawain band Mayday or "Wu Yue Tian".

I've been listening to several of their past songs lately, and I must say that I'm impressed.
They have released a new album quite recently with a hit song called "DNA". when I first heard it, quite nice rock song, not great, was my first impression. Also heard that they are very popular in Taiwan, China and HK.

But after listening to more of their music, I think they have got to be one of the best bands in the world. Really comparable to a U2 from the UK or a Rolling Stones from the USA.
Great musicians all 5 of them and excellent songwriting and lyrics from the lead singer Ashin, who is really talented.

Any fans of Mayday here or anyone who has heard their music?

I'm a great fan of Wu Bai too, one of my favourite songs of all time is "Lang Ren Qin Ge". (The Wanderer's Love Song)

I prefer this group; the lead singer is definitely better than Ah Xin.

Mayday not bad but you cant really compare them to U2.

No matter how good their music is, it's still about love and more love.

For this i'll take beyond anytime. Their dead leader wrote many amazing songs about freedom, aspirations, social justice...not only about love.

I attended their 1st concert held at Indoor stadium several years ago & walked away impressed! Great musicianship & original material. I especially like their catchy Hokkien ballads! The lead singer is talented-pen their own songs & also for other singers as well.

On a serious note, JW5, how do you appraise a song ? What are the yardsticks you used to determine if the songwriting is excellent ?

You have a point there.
Mayday's target audience appears to be the younger crowd, songs about love, angst, friendship, growing up, ideals, even cartoon (Mickey Mouse) and fictional (Monkey God) characters.
I think they steer clear of political themes because of Taiwan's political situation.
And they are quite young and have been around for only 10 years, so perhaps their concerns are more those of ordinary young people.
But although U2 is a great band, their themes get a little tiresome sometimes.

On a serious note, JW5, how do you appraise a song ? What are the yardsticks you used to determine if the songwriting is excellent ?

Melody - a catchy tune that has not been heard before, not afraid to use the minor key occasionally, nice twists in the melody

Lyrics - tell a story or describes something, not obvious, an interesting theme for the song
