KUALA LUMPUR: HTC has launched its HD7 smartphone which runs on the Microsoft Windows Phone 7 operating system. The HD7 – the first HTC phone to use the system – is exclusively being offered by telecommunications giant Maxis Bhd with several service packages. The smartphone would only be available from tomorrow but loyal Maxis customers who had pre-registered received their units during the launch at the Kuala Lumpur City Centre shopping mall yesterday. Customers who sign up for a 12-month plan will be able to buy the phone for RM1,699 regardless of the service plan they choose. The service plans ranges from RM50 to RM500 a month.

Smart and sleek: Models showing off the HTC HD7 smartphone with its Live Tile interface.

Those who opt for the 24-month plan will get the phone for RM1,399. Customers who just want the phone will have to fork out RM2,399. The HD7 has a large 4.3in display, 16GB of built-in memory and a five-megapixel autofocus camera on the back that’s also capable of capturing 720p high-definition videos. Windows Phone 7 has a Live Tiles interface that allows users to view SMS and e-mail messages, contacts, applications and photos as individual tiles on the screen.

The tiles can be customised by the user.
“The interface has completely been redesigned from the previous version and users can even have their Facebook update on a tile,” said Microsoft Operations Pte Ltd senior marketing manager T.C. Tang. Interestingly, the HD7 has a built-in kickstand and slide-out speakers that provide virtual surround sound, making it a mini jukebox.

For corporate users, the phone is able to open and edit Word documents, PowerPoint presentations and Excel spreadsheets. “Maxis will continue to add more of today’s latest smartphones to its range of converged devices for its customers,” said Maxis chief operating officer Jean-Pascal van Overbeke. The HD7 competes with Apple’s iPhone4, Android phones and Research in Motion’s Blackberry range of devices.
