Power has been restored to the 60,000 homes and businesses in Sydney's inner and southwestern suburbs, but motorists can still expect traffic chaos.

Ausgrid said power was restored about 5.30pm (AEST) on Thursday after a fault was detected on the local electricity network an hour earlier.

But the Transport Management Centre said motorists and public transport users were continuing to experience significant delays after a widespread power failure in Sydney's inner west and southwest.

Trains are still not running between Sydenham and Bankstown due to the partial closure of the Bankstown Line.

However, train tickets can be used on regular bus services, but buses between Dulwich Hill and Punchbowl are delayed by up to 45 minutes.

The centre said all westbound lanes of the M5 East had reopened.

"All westbound diversions have been lifted, but traffic remains extremely heavy, with motorists queued back to the Eastern Distributor," the centre said.

"Citybound lanes of the M5 East remain closed, with traffic queued back to The River Road."

Traffic lights are working again in the area, but traffic is heavy and motorists are advised to delay their trip or allow plenty of additional travel time.
