SINGAPORE: A 43-year-old man has been charged with six counts of tax evasion in the Subordinate Court on Friday.
Neo Tian Teo, who runs a massage centre at the Upper Serangoon Shopping Centre, under-declared his income over six years of tax assessment.
The Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) said Neo under-declared a total of S$125,095 from his company income.
Investigations by the IRAS showed that Neo had falsified his company's statement of accounts and declared a lower amount of net profits in documents submitted to IRAS.
He escaped paying S$8,101.72 in taxes in all.
Neo pleaded guilty to two charges and was sentenced to two weeks' jail.
The four other charges were taken into consideration. Neo is out on an S$8,000 bail and will start his jail term next Friday.
He was also ordered to pay a penalty of S$18,891.99, which is three times the amount of tax evaded on the two charges.
IRAS said it will not hesitate to take strong deterrent action against those who wilfully understate their income even if the amount of tax evaded is small. - CNA/vm
