SINGAPORE: Education Minister and Second Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen is in Indonesia on a two-day visit.
Dr Ng is in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta for the Indo Defence and Aerospace 2008 Expo and Forum.
During his visit to Indo Defence on Wednesday morning, Dr Ng also met Vice-President Jusuf Kalla, who officiated at the exhibition's opening ceremony.
As founding members of ASEAN, Singapore and Indonesia have shared interests in building up defence cooperation within ASEAN and with extra-regional countries.
The strong defence relationship between the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and Indonesian National Defence Forces (TNI) dates back to the first major bilateral exercise, Exercise Eagle, held by both navies in 1974.
Today, the SAF and TNI hold regular bilateral air, land and sea exercises, and professional exchanges.
Such bilateral exercises and interactions are important in enhancing professionalism and building up interoperability between both armed forces. - CNA/vm
