The Straits Times article today, “Early polls ? Possible, though not imminent” contains a misleading headline beneath which reads “PAP wants to be ready to call elections quickly if financial crisis drags out, observers say”
Strictly speaking, the PAP has no right to call for elections as it is merely a political party. Only the government of the day has the power to dismiss Parliament and call for elections and it just so happen that the PAP is now the government of Singapore.
MM Lee Kuan Yew once boasted rather arrogantly he does not make apologies for the fact “the Singapore government is the PAP and the PAP is the government of Singapore.”
This unfortunate myth has been perpetuated for four decades by the mainstream media and various state organs to such an extent that the PAP party’s logo is regarded by many as a symbol of the nation.
