SINGAPORE - His team fared below the national average of 60.14 per cent - the ruling People's Action Party's (PAP) worst showing to date.
But having survived the close shave, National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan has vowed to take this "lesson" very seriously and has promised to review housing policies, which came under attack during the hustings.
In the wee hours of this morning, Mr Mah and his five-member team were returned to Parliament after edging out the National Solidarity Party's (NSP) team led by secretary-general Goh Meng Seng to retain Tampines Group Representation Constituency (GRC).
The PAP team won 57.22 per cent of the votes cast.
"Housing will be one of the issues, it's one of the areas that we will have to go back and re-look again," said Mr Mah, after delivering his victory speech to some 1,500 supporters at the Bedok Stadium.
"We have already started doing that and we will go through all the various aspects of housing and see how we can improve that. I will do a review of that but, at this stage, it is premature to talk about it."
During the hustings, the NSP team took aim at Mr Mah and his ministry's housing policies repeatedly, calling for cheaper housing for all Singaporeans, as well as new flats to be sold to young couples at affordable prices.
Housing, along with the rising cost of living and the influx of foreign workers, were the Opposition's pet beef during campaigning, with almost every party to a man calling on Singaporean voters to vote them into Parliament.
Unlike his PAP colleagues, such as Dr Maliki Osman (East Coast GRC) and Mr Teo Ser Luck (Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC), who were enthusiastically hugged by supporters, Mr Mah, Tampines GRC's incumbent Member of Parliament since 1988, seemed subdued as he shook the hands of supporters who had waited patiently past midnight for the results.
The minister acknowledged it was time to "take heed of the lessons and do something about it", if the PAP wants a stronger mandate at the next General Election.
"We can always do better. We are never satisfied with our votes," said Mr Mah.
"Everybody who casts a vote against us has a reason. Obviously, we have fallen short of their expectations or done something that they are not happy with. This is a lesson, and something that we must take to heart and do something about ... We will find out why and try to regain their trust."
CHEEBYE SHORT FART, STILL DUNNO WHY VOTES GIVE HIM A LESSON. STILL NEED TO FIND OUT WHY!
