Marina Bay to define S'pore the way the Bund defines Shanghai

Marina Bay's Helix bridge connecting the promenade and Marina Bay Sands.

The Marina Bay will be a key platform and catalyst for Singapore's future growth.

Speaking at the official opening of the waterfront promenade at Marina Bay on Sunday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said Marina Bay will boost Singapore's position as a financial hub for Asia.

Mr Lee said the new Marina Bay will define Singapore in the same way the Bund defines Shanghai.

He said: "The private sector has shown its confidence in Marina Bay. Already, it has attracted $20 billion of private sector investments in real estate. And we've got firms, local and international ones from around the world - America, Australia, Europe, the Middle East - they've come, they're optimistic and bullish about the development. In fact, they would like us to develop it further."

Marina Bay is not just for businesses.

With the completion of the 3.5km waterfront promenade, which follows the opening of the Helix Bridge and Marina Bay Sands integrated resort earlier this year, visitors can now walk around the whole Marina Bay and take in the magnificent views.

Prime Minister Lee said: "I came here one evening a few weeks ago, walked along the helical bridge, walked most of the way around the Bay, and it was full of people - families, children, courting couples, tourists - taking in the sights, enjoying the atmosphere."

With the upcoming Youth Olympic Games and Gardens by the Bay to open soon, Mr Lee said the area promises to be a vibrant destination for all Singaporeans and tourists.

He said the development of Marina Bay mirrors the government's efforts to build best homes for Singaporeans.

And this is possible, as long as the economy prospers and people work together.

Mr Lee also launched the Marina Bay City Gallery.

URA's group director (Urban Planning and Design), Fun Siew Leng, said: "The Marina Bay City Gallery shows the transformation story of Marina Bay - how it's been developed over the last 30 years, from planning to implementation to what you see on site today. It tells the fascinating story of all the different events that happen in this area since the 1800s up to now."

The gallery's centrepiece is a model of the entire Marina Bay area.

Visitors can make the Singapore Flyer and Marina Bay Sands integrated resort light up, by just touching the interactive panels.

Admission to the gallery is free.

To celebrate the opening of the waterfront promenade, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) has organised a two-day carnival, which started on Saturday.

It expects about 80,000 people to gather at Marina Bay area to enjoy the performances and activities.

There's a Cantonese movie about the Shanghai Beach (The Bund). Maybe Ass Loon can be director of Singapore new movie titled The Marina Bund.

The Bund (Chinese: 上海灘; pinyin: Shàng Hǎi Tān; literally "Shanghai Bund") is a Hong Kong period drama television series first broadcast on TVB in 1980. The series spawned several sequels, remakes and film adaptations. The theme song of the series, performed by Frances Yip, also became a memorable Cantopop hit.

[edit] Plot
Set in the 1920s Republican era in China, the story tells how triad members Hui Man-keung and Ting Lik struggle to survive in Shanghai (then an international settlement), and their rise to prominence in the triad world later. Hui and Ting join Fung King-yiu's triad and both of them fall in love with Fung's daughter Ching-ching, who has a crush on Hui. When Hui discovers that Fung King-yiu is actually collaborating with secret agents from Japan to destroy the patriotic Ching-mou School, Hui turns against Fung and he kills the Japanese spy Kaoriko Yamaguchi in a gunfight. Fung is furious with Hui's betrayal and he sends Ting to kill Hui, but Ting secretly helps Hui escape on account of their friendship.

Hui settles in Hong Kong, where he marries Ah-tai and starts a new life with her family. Fung King-yiu is still furious with Hui for betraying him and he sends his men to Hong Kong to kill Hui. The killers murder Ah-tai and her family, while Hui survives because he was not at home. Hui swears vengeance on Fung and he returns to Shanghai to take his revenge. During Hui's absence, Ting Lik starts a romantic relationship with Ching-ching and she promises to marry Ting on one occasion after Ting is seriously injured in a fight. Hui suffers an emotional breakdown due to the loss of his family, and after seeing that his love interest has agreed to marry his best friend. His depression ignites the anger in him and increases his thirst for revenge. Hui challenges Fung King-yiu to a Russian roulette game later and he kills Fung. Ching-ching is unable to forgive Hui for killing her father and she leaves China for France. Although Hui and Ting Lik co-operate and manage to dominate the triad world of Shanghai later, Hui is uninterested in triad affairs as he is eager to find Ching-ching and patch up with her. In the last episode, Hui is shot to death outside a restaurant on the night before he leaves for France.

Marina Bay to define S'pore the way the Bund defines Shanghai

any chances they would be renaming Marina Bay again? i've got the perfect name for it, pay me SGD$400,000.00 can already :p:p:p

Shanghai, the Baund, was bombed flat to the ground in WWII, Chinapore wants to be like her? Very stinkie mouth form Stinkie.

when I heard the news...I was extremely disappointed...

By referencing Marina Bay to Shanghai Bund, it shows:

a. direct sucking up to China...waterfront scenery...the best waterfront scenery in the world is not China Shanghai. If you wanna compare...why not compare with Hk's Victoria Harbour? It is voted one of the best waterfront scenery in the world ! And Hong Kong is a leading financial centre. Why must our PM be so blatant to suck up to China?

b, Secondly, Shanghai Bund is actually a historical reminder of the colonial times of china where various Western powers divide up Shanghai into various zones. And the old buildings you see there are all typically European acrchitechal...is PM Lee implying that we must be subjected to Western rule and gets divided up again?

c. Last but not least, we all remember in Shanghai Bund, there is this humilating sign - Chinese and Dogs not allowed. Perhaps PM Lee wants to erect a similar sign somewhere along the Marina Bay? NS Men and Dogs are not allowed. Oh hell no, there is already some form of restriction - the 100 dollar levy to Marina Sands.

What the hell is our PM thinking of?

The Bund? It is ironic when u realize that period was renowned for its mafia bosses, not unlike the PAPee dogs! :oIo:

Compared to Shanghai Bund it is like walking around a pond.

sg is always a wannabe. but it's better to be a shanghai bund wannabe than a zhouzhuang water town wannabe or a venice wannabe. water themes are not all nostalgic and romantic. they can be septic.

Are we still on track to Swiss Standard of living? I don't recall the Swiss trying to copy cat a Shanghai Bund there.
