SINGAPORE: A 36-year-old man who tucked his iPhone into the laces of his shoe to capture videos of women's inner thighs was on Tuesday sentenced to nine months' imprisonment.

Be Keng Hoon, a former technical officer, had taken upskirt videos of more than 260 women between October 2011 and August 2012.

He committed one of the offences at ION shopping mall in 2012.

The locations and identity of the other women are unknown.

The prosecution pointed out that the volume of the offences reflected Be's persistence, and urged the court to impose a three-month sentence on each of the five proceeded charges, with three of them to run consecutively.

The prosecution also said that Be would have continued to invade women's privacy had he not been caught red-handed.

The risk of the videos circulating was also an aggravating factor.

But the defence argued that Be suffers from an ailment and this was reflected in the medical report.

It urged the court to consider placing Be on probation.

However, District Judge Jasbendar Kaur noted the nature of the offences and how the incidents took place over a long period of time, making Be unsuitable for probation.

The maximum penalty for insulting a woman's modesty, or intruding her privacy through such a gesture is a year's jail and fine. - CNA/ms
