The Manchester United winger, 26, has faced a barrage of criticism for his blatant falls against both QPR and Aston Villa.

Even Old Trafford boss Alex Ferguson admitted that the England man ‘overdid’ his tumble against Villa on Sunday.

Club legend Bryan Robson believes his play-acting could cost United dear. And now fans have turned against the £16m former Villa star.

In a scathing editorial, influential fanzine Red Issue pilloried Young, slamming him for ‘his latest disgraceful dive’ and adds ‘diving is cheating’ and says his behaviour is a betrayal of the code of conduct instilled at Old Trafford by legendary boss Matt Busby.

The editorial quotes Busby’s saying: “If anything is to be gained from football, it is to be gained by winning or losing with dignity.”

For good measure, the magazine also describes former United star and Sky pundit Gary Neville’s attempts to justify diving and other forms of cheating as ‘depressing’.

SUITS ROO, SIR ... Rooney is happy with Young's actions

By ROSS GREGORY

WAYNE ROONEY has leapt to the defence of under-fire Manchester United team-mate Ashley Young.

England winger Young has been accused of cheating in the last fortnight after diving to win penalties against QPR and Aston Villa.

Even Old Trafford boss Alex Ferguson has told him to stop diving.

But Rooney believes the former Villa star is being picked on only because of who he plays for.

Roo said: “It has been exaggerated because Ashley is a United player.

“In any case, at times you are trying to get out of the way of being kicked and people think you have dived. The game is so quick these days it is difficult for the referee to get some decisions right.”

Rooney, 26, needs only one more goal to join George Best and Dennis Viollet as the joint fourth-highest scorer in United’s history on 179 goals.

Fergie has already predicted his star striker will eclipse Bobby Charlton’s club record of 249.

Victory today at home to Everton will put United one win away from retaining the Premier League title — no matter how Manchester City fare on their trip to Wolves later in the day.

Rooney added: “To be five points clear now is a great situation to be in.

“But we have to do our job until the end of the season to retain the title.”
