SINGAPORE - To unsuspecting onlookers, the odd-job worker was being a good dad by taking his two sons for outings at shopping malls.
But Rosezeli Omar, 44, had motives of shoplifting.
He visited a Self-Fix store at White Sands mall in Pasir Ris on May 18 last year with his sons, one aged six or seven, and the other about two years old.
He took several items, put them into a bag in a pram, and left without paying the total bill of $486. His actions were caught on closed-circuit television.
The court heard that about a month later - on June 19 - Rosezeli visited another Self-Fix store, this time at Tampines One, with his two children. He stole $555 worth of items.
Both times, he sold the goods to construction workers in Bedok and spent the money.
He was arrested on July 5 last year, charged in court and released on police bail.
He absconded, and a warrant for his arrest was issued on Oct 18 last year. On June 22 this year, the police caught him with drug paraphernalia at a void deck in Tampines and he was taken to Bedok Police Station.
There, a packet of heroin was found in his coin pocket. His urine samples also tested positive for morphine.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Joshua Lai said Rosezeli took heroin by injecting it intravenously, and smoking the drug.
Rosezeli told the police that he would feel sick and be in pain if he did not take heroin. He abused heroin due to his family problems, and used about two straws' worth a day. His supplier was a man at Jurong Point shopping centre.
He was last sentenced to 51/2 years' jail and three strokes of the cane in 1999 for taking morphine. On Monday, he was sentenced to the minimum of seven years' jail and six strokes of the cane for drug consumption, under enhanced drug-taking laws, and one year's jail for having 0.05g of heroin.
Both sentences will be served consecutively, but concurrently to his sentences for theft in dwelling and possession of smoking utensils.
He was sentenced to six months' jail on each of two charges of theft in dwelling, and three months' jail for having drug utensils.
Another five charges were taken into consideration during his sentencing.
