5 HURT: Hitman, driver flee after gangland-style attack

KUALA LUMPUR: A 38-YEAR-OLD man died while five of his friends were wounded after a hitman opened fire at them in front of a restaurant in Batu 3, Jalan Ipoh, here yesterday.

In the 4am gangland-style attack, S. Saravanan died on the spot after a bullet hit the back of his head.

City Criminal Investigation Department chief senior Assistant Commissioner Gan Kong Meng said initial investigations showed that the deceased might have been the primary target.

He said Saravanan and seven others were dining at a table in front of the restaurant, when the suspect, described as a light-skinned man and wearing a red cap, approached them.

"Investigations revealed that the suspect had arrived in a Perodua Myvi.

"After stepping out of the car, he walked towards the men, while pretending to talk on the phone.

"When he got closer, he took out a pistol and fired a shot at Saravanan, before aiming the gun at the other victims and firing between six and seven shots.

"Another suspect, who was driving the Myvi, rushed towards the scene and picked up the gunman before they sped away."

Gan said Saravanan was rushed to Kuala Lumpur Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The other victims, aged between 22 and 52, were taken to hospital by ambulance. They suffered wounds to the shoulders, cheeks and legs. They were reported to be in stable condition.

Gan said the police Forensics Unit found eight 9mm bullet casings and two slugs at the scene, and was investigating the motive for the attack.
