HE DID not want to let his daughter go on a school trip to Hong Kong as she was not doing well in her studies.
But when Mohamed Salim Shahul Hameed, 47, learnt that she had left for the trip on Nov 28 last year, he became angry with his wife.
He felt that Madam Mohamuthal Mohd Hanifa, 44, had disobeyed him by allowing their second daughter, then 11, to join the trip despite his objection.
When they started arguing, he punched her on the face once while she was seated on the sofa. When she raised her hands in self-defence, he punched her on the back a few times. He also used his belt to whip her arm.
It was only when she started to cry that he went into his room.
The wife made a police report about the attack two days after the incident. She also saw a doctor, who found bruises on her right arm and swelling near the right ear.
Yesterday, the jobless man was sentenced to four weeks’ jail for using criminal force on his wife, a customer service officer, at their home in Jurong East Street 24. He said she had forgiven him. They have three children.
Salim was allowed to defer sentence until tomorrow. He could have been jailed for up to three months, fined up to $1,500, or both.
