Man pours acid on wife, daughter
By TAN SIN CHOW

GEORGE TOWN: A civil servant crept into his wife’s bedroom early yesterday morning and splashed acid on her and their sleeping daughter.

His badly burnt wife slipped into a coma and died about 10 hours later while his daughter is in the hospi-tal’s intensive care unit. She could lose her eyesight.

Police are still trying to find out why the Penang Municipal Council staff had attacked them.

Dastardly attack: The suspect leading policemen to his house in search of evidence after he had allegedly splashed his wife and daughter with acid early yesterday.

Both housewife Cheong Swee Lin, 50, and daughter Tan Hui Lan, 17, were sleeping in their home in Jalan Batu Lancang when the man came in at 3am and splashed acid over them.

The acid burnt about 80% of Cheong’s body and she slipped into a coma. She died at 1pm yesterday.

Tan, who suffered 20% burns on her face and torso, ran screaming outside to seek help from the neighbours who rushed them to the Penang Hospital.

“Their clothes were in tatters,” said a policeman on duty at the hospital.

Penang police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Wira Ayub Yaakob said the husband turned himself in at the Jelutong police station shortly after the incident.

“He lodged a report and we arrested him on the spot,” he said at the Penang Hospital after visiting Tan at the ICU.

He said the relationship between the husband and wife had deteriorated in the past seven years and that the wife was the primary target.

According to their son Choon Hong, 20, a receipt for the purchase of a bottle of acid in December was found in March this year but they could not find the item at home.

“If we had found the acid earlier, maybe this would not have happened,” said the undergraduate of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) when met at his home yesterday.

The acid bottle was recovered at the scene.
