SINGAPORE: An unemployed man, who was seeking medical treatment for flu, ended up fracturing his ex-wife's boyfriend's ribs after heated exchanges.
For this, 41-year-old Low Lee Seng was on Friday sentenced to three years' jail and ordered to receive six strokes of the cane.
In October 2012, Low was at Tang Medical Surgery at Jalan Batu to see a doctor.
The victim, 31-year-old Chin Chee Chung was also at the clinic.
In mitigation, the court was told Low became angry when he heard that Chin, also jobless, had owed his ex-wife S$2,000.
According to his ex-wife, Chin had tried to repay her with a stolen cash cheque and she had received calls from the police.
Chin was also said to have tried giving Low's ex-wife drugs.
On the day of the offence, Low wanted to rebuke Chin for getting his ex-wife into trouble. This escalated into a fist fight, where Low punched Chin several times.
Low also had one other charge -- of hurting another man in January this year -- taken into consideration during sentencing.
For causing grievous hurt to Chin, Low could have been jailed up to 10 years, fined and caned. - CNA/nd
