SINGAPORE : A former coffee shop assistant was jailed four and a half years on Thursday for cheating more than a hundred people of a total of S$37,500 in a Hari Raya car rental scam.
39-year-old Ngiu Ah Peng, who is now unemployed, committed 151 offences in total.
Ngiu, along with two unknown persons, posted an advertisement in various newspapers, promoting a Hari Raya car rental package.
It stated that the company, which is also unknown, was renting out vehicles for a week during the Hari Raya period, from August 29 to September 1 last year.
Ngiu and his accomplices received several responses.
They even maintained this ruse when their victims went to their company premises and paid between S$400 and S$800 each time in deposits .
However, when the victims tried to collect their rental vehicles, the company was closed and Ngiu was uncontactable.
Ngiu also cheated several pawnshops with fake Rolex watches, where he made away with between S$3,500 and S$6,000 each time.
He also stole other people's credit cards from letter boxes to make fraudulent purchases.
