SINGAPORE: An unemployed man was sentenced to six-and-a-half years' jail, and given a maximum of 24 strokes of the cane, after he pleaded guilty to robbing several taxi drivers with a knife.
Ng Kheng Yew, 43, committed the offences on eight occasions between October and November at Bukit Merah.
Ng was convicted of three counts of robbery. Four other counts of robbing taxi drivers violently and one additional count of possessing an offensive weapon were taken into consideration.
The court heard that upon reaching the destination in the taxi, Ng would point a Swiss knife at the neck of the drivers, threatening them to hand over their money.
He made away with nearly S$1,600 in cash and valuables within a two-month robbery period.
Ng has a history of drug offences dating more than 25 years ago.
