SINGAPORE - He would accuse his victims of assaulting his brother so he could insist on looking for pictures of the attack on their mobile phones.
He would then show them the knife tucked in his jeans or beat them up before fleeing with their phones.
On six occasions, Muhammad Tarmidzi Tahir, 23, worked with an accomplice Sham Raj Elansharan, 16, and robbed victims aged 14 to 17 in Ang Mo Kio and Yishun.
They took a total of five iPhones and an LG mobile phone, which is estimated to be worth $1,958, and sold them to second-hand dealers.
On Monday, he was sentenced to six and a half years in jail and 24 strokes of the cane.
According to the Straits Times, he had been sentenced to reformative training twice before and requested to be sent to the Reformative Training Centre again, saying that he was confident that he would be able to change his ways.
District Judge Roy Neighbour rejected his request on the basis that he no longer qualified for reformative training.
In addition to robbery, Muhammad Tarmidzi was also convicted of rioting in 2010 and slashing a 15-year-old in October 2009 during a dispute.
He had inflicted a deep 6.5cm long cut on his victim's head and an 8cm cut on the shoulder.
