He was placed on probation for two years in April 2009 for taking part in two gang attacks, but Koay Xin De blew it by joining an unlawful assembly in June 2010. As he had breached the conditions of his probation, he was dealt with for the earlier offences.
On Feb 21, the 21-year-old was jailed 1 1/2 years for the gang attacks. Koay is appealing against the sentence.
In the judgment issued on Wednesday, District Judge Soh Tze Bian noted that the earlier offences were far more serious than the 2010 offence, for which Koay was fined $6,000 and jailed for two days.
In May 2008, Koay had joined about 20 accomplices to attack three teenagers at Hougang Avenue 1. He had also threatened to cut off the fingers of one of the victims unless he got his gang members to come down in 10 minutes.
