An Indian national who beat the red lights and caused the death of a motorcyclist at a road junction was jailed for 12 months and banned from driving for seven years on Tuesday.
Construction worker Kaliappan alias Kalaiappan Balu, 37, pleaded guilty to causing the death of bellhop Nordin Duriat, 59, by driving dangerously at the junction of River Valley Road and New Bridge Road at 6.13am on July 21, 2010.
He was driving a lorry at between 80 and 100kmh when he beat the lights at the cross-junction, resulting in a head-to-side collision with Mr Nordin's bike travelling from his right to left.
The court heard that the collision happened about seven seconds after the traffic light had turned green in favour of the rider.
