He would filch the identity card of his Singaporean wife and hand it over to his Chinese national girlfriend to use to try to sell the matrimonial flat and to apply for loans. In total, he cheated a licensed moneylender of $140,000 between January and April 2011.

On Thursday, Teo Tiong Guan, 47, a former stevedore, was jailed for two years and four months for cheating. His girlfriend, identified in court papers only as Xiao Ling, is at large. She is about 30 years old.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Victor Lim told a district court that Teo met her in a pub in Chinatown. They kept in touch and in November 2010, he hatched the plan to cheat licensed credit companies. She agreed to go along and was to be paid $500 to $1,000 each time.

On Jan 24, they used his wife's identity to fool sole proprietor Rajadanran Suppiah of Gauthamma Credit in granting Xiao Ling a $20,000 loan from the credit company at the offices of Prestige Legal in Toa Payoh Central. By Apr 1, the eight loans she took amounted to $140,000.

Man gets 37 months' jail for cheating and causing hurt

SINGAPORE: A self-employed man took his wife's identity card and passed it to his Chinese girlfriend to help him cheat credit companies.

He met the 30-year-old woman, also known as 'Xiao Ling', at a pub in Chinatown.

She allegedly posed as his wife to aid him in scamming licensed credit companies of about S$140,000.

For that, 47-year-old Teo Tiong Guan was Thursday sentenced to three years and one month jail for six counts of cheating and another count of voluntarily causing hurt.

Teo first met Xiao Ling in 2010 and later suggested conspiring with her, as he was facing financial difficulties.

He took his wife's identity card from her drawer and passed it to Xiao Ling.

The duo made nearly 30 fraudulent loan applications within a six-month period, starting from November 2010.

Xiao Ling, who's still at large, allegedly forged signatures and deceived the credit companies into disbursing them S$20,000 each time.

The duo used the same tactic when making a resale of HDB unit application on February 14 last year.

Xiao Ling allegedly forged the signature of Teo's wife, deceiving an HDB officer into processing the application.

During this period, Teo was also involved in a case of assault over debts.

Teo went to a warehouse at Jurong Port Road to get back S$10,000 from 42-year-old forklift driver, Lee Chiow Teck.

Incensed that Lee could not pay up, Teo removed a chopper hidden in his pants.

During the scuffle, he slashed Lee's middle finger, causing a 2-centimetre wound.

Teo stated in his mitigation plea that he did not receive the full sum from his scams.

Teo, who was facing financial problems, was also married with five children.

Court documents also revealed that Teo had a string of previous offences, including drink driving and causing hurt.
