SINGAPORE: A 29-year-old man has been sent for corrective training for six years and ordered to be caned six times for various offences including theft, cheating and slashing another person's face.
Muhammad Kassim Ramdi was convicted of stealing items amounting to more than S$5,800 on different occasions in April 2013.
He stole a woman's backpack from her pushcart at Raffles Xchange mall.
Muhammad Kassim, together with his 26-year-old girlfriend Norliza Roslan, then went to Mustafa Centre to buy mobile phones and a bracelet with the victim's credit card.
As an accomplice, Norliza was given 13 months' jail in August 2013.
Also in April this year, the accused went to Singapore Petroleum Company’s petrol kiosk at Redhill Close to enquire about a car washing job.
The staff there realised their mobile phones were missing and reported the matter to the police.
But the accused returned to the petrol kiosk about a week later to ask about the job vacancy again.
One of the staff, 17-year-old Nicholas Teo, confronted the accused about the mobile phones and Muhammad Kassim challenged him to a fight.
The matter ended with the accused leaving when Mr Teo called the police.
The accused went back to his sister's house located nearby and returned to the petrol kiosk with a kitchen knife.
He slashed Mr Teo's face.
Muhammad Kassim faced other charges including the consumption of drug and providing false information.
He faced a total of 14 charges but the prosecution proceeded on seven. - CNA/gn
