SINGAPORE: An unemployed man has been sentenced to 15 weeks' jail and fined S$70,000 on two counts of acting as an illegal bookmaker.
Kelvin Neo Bing Wei, 21, had conspired with other accomplices to solicit visitors of Resorts World Sentosa Casino to place insurance bets with him.
Insurance bets are optional side bets a patron places in addition to the main bet placed in a game. It 'protects' a patron from losing all the money he has placed bets on.
Neo collected illegal insurance bets from patrons over three days from October 31 to November 2, 2011.
He could have been jailed up to five years and fined up to S$200,000.
