Man gets 11 years jail, caning for rape and molest

A 25-YEAR-OLD man was sentenced to a total of 11 years and eight strokes of the cane on Monday for molesting and raping a 13-year-old girl.
The accused, who cannot be named as there is a gag order, is out on $100,000 bail pending his appeal against conviction and sentence.
He was 21 and living at the victim's home at the time of the offences on Dec 28, 2006.
The court heard that he had been in a relationship with the victim's elder sister, aged 18, but the relationship ended several months before the two offences.
He had moved in to live with the family in the latter part of 2005 as he had no place to stay.
The prosecution said he physically abused the family during his stay and repaid the kindness of the victim's 55-year-old mother by sexually assaulting her younger daughter, now 17.
Other aggravating factors highlighted included the fact that there was premeditaiton and planning, and the accused had used a Swiss Army knife to threaten the victim into submission during the rape.
