Taipei, May 16 (CNA) A Taiwanese businessman who returned from China last week has been infected with rubella, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Saturday.
It was found that over the past week, the patient had come into contact with 522 people, including airline passengers, friends, restaurant workers and healthcare workers, but none of those people have developed symptoms of the virus so far, according to CDC Deputy Director-General Chou Jih-haw (周志浩).
Chou said the 40-year-old man is believed to have contracted the virus during a recent visit to Wuxi in the Chinese province of Jiangsu.
On May 8, the patient traveled on Dragonair Flight KA877 from Shanghai to Kong Kong then connected via Flight KA456 to Kaohsiung, Chou said.
He came down with rubella symptoms, including fatigue and a runny nose, on May 9, and a rash appeared on his arms the following day.
He sought medical attention three times between May 11 and May 14, and it was confirmed on May 15 that he had contracted rubella.
The patient has been put under home quarantine, and authorities will continue to monitor the health of his close contacts until June 4, Chou said.
So far this year, Taiwan has recorded six cases of rubella, according to the CDC. Among them, three were indigenous and three imported, including two from China.
