Man fined, banned from driving over fatal expressway accident
Published on Oct 6, 2011

By Elena Chong

A construction worker was fined $8,000 on Thursday and banned from driving for three years, for causing the death of a motorcyclist along an expressway earlier in 2011.

Malaysian Chai Boon Wu, 29, admitted to causing the death of Mr Sulong Yahya, 61, by doing a negligent act along Seletar Expressway on Feb 24.

He was driving a van when he failed to check a blind spot on the right while filtering to the lane on the right.

This resulted in Mr Sulong skidding and falling into the path of a car which ran over him and caused his death.

A district court heard that when Mr Sulong saw the van suddenly cutting into his path, he tried to take evasive action to avoid a collision.

He swerved to the right and applied emergency brakes, which resulted in him skidding and falling to the right into the car, which was unable to brake in time.

Chai could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined for the offence.
