A man was fined $4,000 on Tuesday for causing grievous hurt to a passenger in a military ambulance when he was serving his full-time national service three years ago.

Wong Kun Chee, 23, was driving the military ambulance and ferrying two passengers to Sungei Gedong camp after medical treatment when the accident happened along Lim Chu Kang Road at about 11pm on June 2, 2009.

A court heard that Wong, who pleaded guilty on Monday, was negotiating a right bend along Lim Chu Kang Road when he wiped his eyes with his left hand and closed them for one to two seconds.

As a result, the vehicle steered to the left and hit the lamp post control box.
