SINGAPORE - The police have arrested a 30-year-old who is suspected to have cheated several merchants of over a million dollars worth of merchandise.
Between Sep and Oct, the police received several reports of cheating incidences from several merchants in different areas such as Bukit Panjang, Boon Lay, Woodlands, Orchard Road and Tampines.
Investigations revealed that the man cheated the merchants by deceiving them into believing that his debit card transactions went through successfully and inducing them to hand over the jewelleries and electronic goods, worth over S$1 million.
After he left the shops, the merchants were notified by the banks that the debit card transactions were unsuccessful.
The suspect will be charged in court on Nov 1, and if found guilty he can be jailed up to 10 years.
The police said that efforts to recover the loot from the suspect are still on-going.
