Man charged with theft of gold bars from pawnshop

SINGAPORE: A man has been charged with the theft of three gold bars valued at more than S$15,600 from a pawnshop.

Ang Swee Chong, 46, is accused of stealing the three 100-gramme gold bars from MoneyMax, located at Jalan Bukit Merah.

The alleged incident is said to have taken place on Tuesday at about 2.15pm.

Ang allegedly went into the pawnshop pretending to want to buy gold bars.

The staff was said to have handed over the gold bars to Ang for viewing, but he later fled with the gold bars.

The maximum penalty for the offence is a jail term of seven years and a fine. - CNA/ec

Police have arrested a 46-year-old man who allegedly fled with gold bars from a pawnshop in Bukit Merah Central.

The incident happened at about 2.15pm on Tuesday when the suspect entered the shop to buy gold bars.

Staff handed over three bars for viewing. While appearing to view the bars, he fled with them.

Clementi Police Division officers arrested the man early on Wednesday in the vicinity of Sims Avenue. They recovered two of the bars, valued at about $9,400, from him. They recovered the other bar, valued at about $6,200, from a pawnshop in South Bridge Road
