A property agent was charged on Tuesday with getting another man to take the rap on his behalf for a driving offence.

Chandiramani Haresh Vishindas, 40, is accused of perverting the course of justice by getting Azli Mohd Hasan to assume criminal liability on his behalf for driving along the road shoulder in September 2009.

Azli, 36, a chauffeur, was charged with a similar offence.

Vishindas is also charged with offering Mr Tan Yew Chye $200 as a reward to take the rap.

He took the rap for a friend's traffic violation and will now spend five weeks in jail.

District Judge Paul Quan rebuked Azli Mohd Hasan, 36, for perverting the course of justice by claiming to be the driver of a rental car that drove on the road shoulder of the Pan-Island Expressway towards Changi airport.

The 36-year-old chauffeur had pleaded guilty to assuming criminal liability on behalf of Chandiramani Haresh Vishindas, who was the one driving the rental car on Sept 2, 2009.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Gordon Oh had told the court that car rental agency Surpass Runner Services received a request for the driver's particulars from the Traffic Police about a week later on Sept 10, but Vishindas claimed that a friend was driving it instead.
