He borrowed money from illegal moneylenders to set up a prostitution business.

He even sought help from a friend who had experience working in an online vice ring.

Lai Han Keong, 31, faced a total of six charges of managing a brothel by engaging in a conspiracy with two co-accused, procuring Thai women for prostitution and knowingly living in part on the prostitution earnings.

On Friday, Lai was sentenced to six months' jail and fined $13,000.

Three of the charges were proceeded on and the rest were taken into consideration during sentencing.

Court documents said that Lai met his Boon Lay neighbourhood friend, Leow Meng Yeow, 32, early last November. Lai lives about 1km away from Leow.

He told Leow, who has managed prostitutes from different websites for a vice syndicate, that he was interested in setting up and creating such a website.

Leow, who is one of the co-accused, said he could arrange for Thai prostitutes to work in Singapore via a Thai counterpart.

To fund that arrangement, Lai borrowed $6,000 from unlicensed moneylenders.

Before the women were brought in, the Thai accomplice sent the pictures of several women to Lai and Leow to view before the duo allowed the women to work here.

The duo also set up a website, where they posted photographs of the women.

Together with Leow, the other co-accused, Camen Ang Kai Yang, 22, received the prostitutes at Changi Airport and Ang provided them with toiletries, including condoms and tissue paper.

When the prostitutes arrived, they had to fulfil a verbal contract of 25 customers without being paid for their services. Food and lodging were provided for them.

Lai booked rooms at Beach Hotel and Fortuna Hotel to be used as a brothel between Jan 7 and 12 this year.

For each short sexual service, customers were charged between $130 and $150.

Of that amount, the prostitutes were paid $80 per customer, while the rest went to the trio.

For his offences, Leow was earlier sentenced to four months' jail and fined $18,000, while Ang was fined $15,000.
