SINGAPORE: Police have arrested a 49-year-old man who is believed to be involved in a series of donation scams.
Since late March, police have received several reports from residents along Cantonment Road that they had been deceived by a man soliciting for donations.
The suspect claimed that a cleaner was killed while working in the housing estate and the donation was meant for the funeral rites and the deceased's family.
Residents who contributed money later found out that the claims were false and lodged police reports subsequently.
Police conducted extensive ground enquiries and eventually established the identity of the suspect.
Police mounted an ambush on April 10 and arrested the suspect at Queensway.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to be responsible for at least five similar cases.
The suspect will be charged in court on Thursday for cheating. If found guilty, he may face a jail term of up to ten years and a fine.
