Man arrested for overnight crime spree in Hougang

SINGAPORE - Police have arrested a 25-year-old man for multiple offences committed on the same night, including break-ins and theft from vehicles, in the vicinity of Hougang.
On September 19, 2013, at about 3.10am, a break-in was reported at a unit located along Hougang Ave 3. A man had gained entry through a window by forcing open the window panes, but fled after he was confronted by the home occupant.
Officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division responded promptly and conducted extensive inquiries on the case. Through on-scene investigations and CCTV footage, the suspect’s identity was established. The suspect was arrested in the vicinity of Simei Street 3 at about 12.30am on 20 September 2013, less than 24 hours after the report.
Further investigations indicate that the suspect could be involved in a case of trespass at a place of worship and a spate of theft from vehicles, all of which were committed in the vicinity of Hougang Street 22 on the same night.
The male suspect will be charged in Court on September 21, 2013 for an offence Housebreaking and Theft by Night under Section 457 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum of 14 years’ imprisonment.
The police reminds the public not to leave valuables unattended or exposed inside their vehicles and risk becoming targets for would-be culprits.
Property owners should also adopt the following crime prevention measures against break-ins:
a) Ensure that all doors, windows and other openings are properly secured with good quality grills and close-shackled padlocks;
b) Keep large sums of cash in banks and expensive jewellery in a safe deposit box;
c) Secure all doors and windows before retiring to bed or when leaving your house unattended, even for a short while; and
d) Install a burglar alarm, sensor light and/or close circuit surveillance camera to cover the access points into your premises. Ensure that they are tested periodically and in good working condition.
