Man arrested for illegal bookmaking

SINGAPORE - A 53-year-old man was arrested yesterday afternoon for suspected involvement in illegal bookmaking activities.
He was spotted at about 4pm on June 20 in the vicinity of French Road housing estate making multiple telephone calls and behaving suspiciously at a coffee shop.
Bookmaking-related paraphernalia such as cash amounting to $5,185 and a mobile phone containing records relating to illegal horse racing, soccer and public lottery betting were found in his possession after the police interviewed and searched him.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to be involved in illegal bookmaking activities.
Investigations are on-going.
Under the Betting Act, Chapter 21, any person who bets with a bookmaker is liable on conviction to a fine up to a maximum of $5,000, or to imprisonment of up to six months, or both.
Any person who is found to be involved in bookmaking is liable on conviction to a fine between $20,000 and $200,000, and shall also be punished with imprisonment for up to five years.
Under the Common Gaming Houses Act, Chapter 49, anyone who places bets on an illegal public lottery is liable on conviction to a fine up to a maximum fine of S$5,000, or to imprisonment of up to six months or both.
Anyone who is found to have assisted in the carrying on of an illegal public lottery is liable on conviction to a fine between S$20,000 and S$200,000, and shall also be liable to imprisonment for up to five years.
