SINGAPORE: Police have arrested a 24-year-old man for committing robbery inside a lift at a block in Ang Mo Kio Street 31.
On March 7 this year, a 14-year-old boy reported that he was assaulted and robbed of his handphone in a lift while on his way home.
The boy sustained bruises on his cheeks and lips.
Officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division then carried out extensive enquiries and investigative probes.
Their efforts paid off when they managed to establish the identity of the suspect and arrested him on March 13 in Ang Mo Kio.
The suspect will be charged in the Court on March 15 for an offence of Robbery with Hurt.
If convicted, he faces a jail term of up to 20 years and could be given at least 12 strokes of the cane.
Acting Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, Superintendent Chua Chuan Seng, advised members of the public to be cautious of suspicious persons when entering lifts.
He said if confronted, members of the public should remain composed, note the suspect's description and alert the Police as soon as it is safe to do so.
