Man arrested for cheating ‘investors’ of RM250,000

PONTIAN: A former Syarikat Air Johor employee has been arrested here for cheating seven people out of more than RM250,000 in “investments” in a pipe installation project.

Pontian OCPD Supt Zahaliman Jamin said the 40-year-old man, who once pretended to be a police officer, was arrested on Jan 6.

“He would use his experience working in the company to deceive his victims by offering them business opportunities.

“The suspect would tell them that he was a contractor from the company and invite them to be his business partner in a pipe installation project here,” he said.

Supt Zahaliman said initial investigations revealed that there was no such project, adding that the man could not furnish any documentation to support his claim.

He said the man, who was sentenced to two years in prison for a cheating case in 2004, had also impersonated a police officer, using the alias Tuan Azman.

“He managed to cheat an individual of RM20,000 by claiming to be the middleman in insurance claims involving fatal accidents,” he said, adding that the man had been put under remand for seven days.

Supt Zahaliman said the case was being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

“We believe that others too have been cheated and urge them to make a police report,” he said, urging those with information to call the police hotline at 07-221 2999.
