SINGAPORE : His intention was to save his marriage but he now has to spend a week behind bars.

28-year-old Cao Xiaodong had wrongfully restrained his ex-wife, Pan Yinhong, also a China national.

Cao committed the offence at a coffeeshop at Blk 631 Ang Mo Kio Ave 4 on 22 May 2011.

He was waiting there for her as he wanted to talk to her about their marriage.

After she sat down, Cao went up to her, grabbed her left forearm and pulled her away from the table.

He then dragged her forcefully for about 50 metres to a bus stop located along Ang Mo Kio Ave 4.

He refused to release Pan.

They were separated later by her colleagues, and one of them called for the police, resulting in Cao's arrest.

In doing so, Cao had gone against a temporary personal protection order known as an Expedited Order issued against him a few weeks before the incident.

For contravening the order, he could have been jailed up to six months, fined up to $2,000, or both.
