A Tennessee man is accused of trying to sell his daughter, 6, for $1,500 to bail his girlfriend out of jail.
Shawn Wayne Hughes, 32, was arrested in Kingsport, Tenn., on March 27, in a credit union parking lot where he had allegedly agreed to meet a buyer.
Earlier he'd allegedly repeatedly offered over the phone to sign over custody to the child’s 75-year-old great grandmother in exchange for the cash, the Kingsport Times News reported.
Police also were listening to several of his calls -- and they had asked the woman to pretend to accept the deal.
Hughes is facing charges of illegal payments in connection with a placement of a child and two counts of drug possession.
His girlfriend, Jessica April Carey, 27, had been arrested on charge of aggravated child abuse and neglect.
Earlier in March, Oklahoma mother of two Misty VanHorn, 22, was accused of trying to sell her children on Facebook for $4,000 to bail her boyfriend out of jail.
