An Indonesian businessman was found dead in the Furama City Centre hotel on Sunday morning.

The body of the 34-year-old was discovered by a security officer.

The Straits Times understands that the security officer was doing his rounds when he came across the man, who was found hanged from a staircase railing outside the gym on level six of the hotel.

Police received a call at about 6.05am that day, informing them of a body found motionless in the hotel at Eu Tong Sen Street.

The man was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.

A staff member, who declined to be named, told The Straits Times yesterday that the man was in Singapore with his wife, toddler-daughter and an Indonesian maid.

He had booked two rooms and checked into the hotel on Friday.

The staff member recalled seeing the man looking troubled a day before he was found dead.
"On Saturday, I noticed that he had appeared troubled as he was seen going to the smoking area outside the hotel a few times," he said.

"But each time, he would take only a few puffs on his cigarette and throw it away. Another guest, whom he had chatted with at the smoking area, later told me that he was facing some financial problems."

The worker said that during the businessman's stay at the hotel, he had often seen him walking around the hotel by himself.

"Once, I saw him looking at brochures of Sentosa with his family at the hotel lobby," said the staff member.

The man's wife was informed after the police were called in.

"She appeared very distraught when she left the hotel on Tuesday," said the worker.

"She had many relatives with her, and I was told that she had returned to Jakarta with her daughter."

Police said they are treating the case as an unnatural death, and are investigating.
