SINGAPORE - The police have arrested a 28-year-old man for breaking into a private house located in the West Coast Road area.

They had received a report on Oct 27 at about 9.20am that a private house located in the vicinity of West Coast Road was broken into.

Cash of about $160 and other valuables amounting to about $800 had been stolen.

Police officers then conducted extensive investigations to establish the identity of the suspect.

The suspect was arrested in the Tuas Road area on Oct 29 at about 1.30pm. A mobile phone, digital camera and several pieces of jewellery were seized from his possession.

The suspect will be charged in Court on Oct 31 Oct for the offence of Housebreaking and Theft by Night punishable under Section 457 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. He can be jailed up to 14 years if found guilty.

Commander of Clementi Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Melvin Yong, commended his officers urged home owners to adopt the following preventive measures to harden their homes against break-ins:

- Ensure that all doors, windows and other openings are well secured with good quality grilles and close-shackled padlocks.

- Secure all doors and window grills before retiring to bed or when leaving your home unattended, even for a short while.

- Install a burglar alarm, motion sensor light and/or close circuit surveillance camera to cover the access points into your premises. Ensure that they are tested periodically and in good working condition.

- Keep large sums of cash in banks and expensive jewellery in a safe deposit box.

- If going away for a prolonged period, suspend the newspaper subscription and arrange for someone to clear mails and check on your home regularly.

The community can also play a part in fighting crime with their active participation in Neighbourhood Watch Groups (NWGs) or Citizen-On-Patrol (COP) initiatives within the neighbourhood and alert the Police immediately when necessary.
