BUTTERWORTH, Penang - The Sessions Court here has fixed Nov 30 for the trial of a seven family members, who are charged with causing the death of a three-year-old child in an exorcism-gone-wrong ritual in August.
In today's proceeding, the prosecution handed over related documents to lawyer C. P. Ang who representing all the accused.
The seven, including the child's parents, grandmother and teenage cousin, are jointly charged under Section 304A of the Penal Code for causing her death by negligence.
If found guilty they could face a maximum two-year jail sentence and fine.
The child's father Chua Seng Ban and mother Lim She Lee, both 35, are also charged additionally with exposing their daughter to physical harm under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.
It carries a maximum RM20,000 (S$8,000) fine and 10 years jail or both upon conviction.
The offence was committed on Aug 5 in their home on Lorong Bukit Minyak 19, Taman Bukit Minyak in Bukit Tengah in central Seberang Prai between 7.50pm and 10.52pm.
It was reported that the seven family members had pinned down the victim, Chua Wan Xuen in the master bedroom of the home in an attempt to save her from an angry spirit.
