SAF only good at shooting its mouth off, instead of shooting somali pirates. No point in spending so many billions $ on defence and you can't protect your own flagged vessels. KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Malaysia's navy was holding seven Somali pirates Saturday who were apprehended in the second dramatic commando raid within hours on ships seized near the African coast, authorities said.

The operations gave both Malaysia and South Korea dramatic successes in the battle against pirates who have long tormented shipping in the waters off the Horn of Africa.

The Royal Malaysian Navy said its commandos wounded three pirates in a gunbattle and rescued the 23 crew members on the Malaysian-flagged chemical tanker MT Bunga Laurel early Friday, shortly after the pirates stormed the vessel in the Gulf of Aden with assault rifles and pistols.

The operation came the same day as another stunning raid by South Korean commandos who freed a hijacked freighter, which on Saturday was sailing toward Oman under the escort of a South Korean destroyer, a company official said.

Malaysia's navy said it sent a ship and a helicopter to the Bunga Laurel, which was then 14 miles (22 kilometers) away, after crew members locked themselves in a safe room and activated a distress call Friday morning.

Elite security forces managed to board the ship and overpower the pirates after an exchange of gunfire, it said in a statement. No one in the rescue team or the ship's crew was injured.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said he was informed that seven pirates were captured. Authorities were considering whether they should be brought to Malaysia to face trial, he said.

"I am proud of our (navy), which acted with full efficiency and demonstrated courage," Najib said.

The navy ship was in the Gulf of Aden to escort vessels with Malaysian interests. The attack occurred only two hours after it had left the Bunga Laurel after accompanying it to what was considered relatively safe waters, the navy said.

It did not provide the crew members' nationalities. Representatives of the Malaysian International Shipping Corp., which operates the Bunga Laurel, could not immediately be reached.

Later Friday, the raid by South Korean commandos killed eight pirates and captured five others, ending the weeklong captivity of 21 crew members, including eight South Koreans, aboard the Samho Jewelry.

The wounded captain of the South Korean freighter, Seok Hae-gyun, was being treated at a hospital in Oman for a gunshot wound in the stomach by a pirate, South Korea's Yonhap news agency said.

Lt. Gen. Lee Sung-ho of the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff told reporters in Seoul that Seok's condition was not life-threatening.

The captain helped the rescue operation by steering the vessel in a zigzag pattern to stall for time after the pirates demanded that the ship be taken toward Somalia, Yonhap said.

A Samho Shipping official confirmed that the ship was heading toward Oman, but said he had no other information because of a breakdown of the ship's communication equipment.

South Korea is studying whether to bring the five captured pirates to Seoul for prosecution or hand them over to countries near Somalia, Yonhap said, citing an unidentified government official.

Repeated calls to South Korea's Foreign Ministry seeking comment went unanswered Saturday.

Other countries' special forces have also launched raids to save ships boarded by Somali pirates within hours of the attacks in recent months, after being assured the crew was locked in safe rooms, commonly referred to as "citadels."

Somalia has not had a functioning government since 1991, during which time piracy has flourished off its coast, sometimes yielding millions of dollars in ransoms.

There are now 29 vessels and 703 hostages being held by pirates off the coast of Somalia. The country lies next to one of the world's most important shipping routes, which connects the Indian Ocean to the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean Sea beyond.

Never under estimate the Malaysian Special Forces, GGK.

They are trained by SAS and US Special forces, with a rich combat history dated back to the Communist Insurgency.

But our SOF have no real combat experience, no KIA, only KIA is training accident, so that is not counted.

With the vast jungle they have and local knowledge, It is obvious that they are better jungle warfare operators, better trackers and can adapt well in prolong tropical jungle warfare.

Even the Communist back then got hammered by them, small group of 5-8 men take on a few hundred men strong communist in the jungle, they have my respect.

Not to mention they fought many firefights in places like Kosovo, Mogadishu, etc. The movie Black Hawk down actually should have depicted them rescuing the american SF. They lost 1 KIA when one of their Condor APCs was hit by a somali RPG. Where is the SAF in all of this? The history of the british led Malay Regiment is a glorious one during WW2. The SAF is only good at making many useless generals of assorted ranks who than go into a GLC.

During WW2, Britain lost Malta, Cyprus, HK, Malaya and Singapore, what else had they lost? Huge continental lands from Burma, India, Middle East to Africa weren't lost at war, not to mention the dominions of Canada, Australia and NZ. British empire lands lost during WW2 amounted to less than 10% of total lands held. France and Holland actually lost the whole of their own countries to Germany during the war. Germany had ceased to be an oversea colonial power after WW1.

I have said this often enough.

Singapore will lose a war to any of its neighbours.

We simply have no spirit to fight inlike natives who really believe they are fighting for their homeland.

From to to bottom Singapore is a big WAYANG!:(

You can even bet that Singdollar is also a wayang, backed with nothing but LKY's promises.

But I forgot to add. You may see some of these Malaysian active forces looking plump and maybe slightly fat. Don't make the mistake they are incompetent and unfit.

They smoke but they are damn motivated.

The world was changing. They've had their time. Their time was up. That's all. Yes, without Germany and Japan challenging them, they might had held on to empire longer, but still just a case of sooner or later.

The word Great have long been dropped from Great Britain...

Great as in Great Britain is geographic, not honorific. Britain means the main island of England, Scotland and Wales. Great Britain means Britain and the rest of the British isles. After the independence of the Irish Republic, the proper political name is United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great was never dropped. Just like America was never dropped from USA even though it's commonly referred to as US.

Google for news on Malaysia and South Korea's "victories" against African pirates at sea.
http://www.google.com.sg/search?hl=...malaysia+south+korea&meta=&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=

The problem of piracy (whether from African or Asian nations) has always been symptomatic of far deeper social, economic and political problems.
Piracy is motivated by poverty, which is perpetuated by corruption and warmongering in African nations. (A US president once said ruefully that 99% of foreign financial aid to poverty striken African nations go into the pockets of the corrupt officials and never reach the starving African man-in-the-street.)
Malaysia and South Korea's "victories" might seem a positive thing, but it risks backlash by angry pirates who feel victimized, and who now threaten to take-no-prisoners in future pirate raids on South Korean and Malaysian vessels.
Just as they say "guns don't kill people, people kill people". Similarly : Money isn't the root of humanity's evil, money merely gives humanity the opportunity to choose 'good' (ie. ethical) or 'bad' (ie. unethical) ways.

All 18 pirates surrendered.
The Singapore-bound tanker, which was carrying lubricating oil and ethylene dichloride, was attacked by pirates about 300 nautical miles (555km) east of Oman but swift action by navy commandos on board the RMN ship Bunga Mas 5 saved the day.

Over at the Arabian Sea, Somali pirates suffered another blow after South Korean special forces stormed a hijacked freighter.

Paskal commandos foil hijack attempt in Gulf of Aden

KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysian Navy has foiled an attempted hijacking by Somali pirates on the MT Bunga Laurel, a Malaysian chemical tanker, in the Gulf of Aden on Thursday.

Commandos from the navy’s elite team Pasukan Khas Laut (Paskal) on board the navy’s auxiliary ship Bunga Mas 5, headed by Komander Nazri Sharif, arrived in time to save the tanker that was heading for Singapore.

A total of 18 pirates, who were involved in the attack, surrendered. Seven pirates were on board Bunga Laurel while 11 were aboard their mothership.

The tanker, laden with lubricating oil and ethylene dichloride, was attacked by the pirates about 300 nautical miles (555km) east of Oman at 11.40pm.

The commandos’ swift action prevented the Malaysian International Shipping Corporation (MISC) from losing the cargo worth an estimated RM30mil, and saved 23 Filipino crew members on board the vessel.

Navy chief Admiral Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Jaafar said Bunga Mas 5 had just completed the task of escorting the tanker and another MISC liquefied natural gas carrier, MT Seri Balhaf, bound for Fujairah, to a safe zone called Easton 4 in the gulf.

“MISC Emergency Reporting Centre (ERC) received a security emergency indication at about 11.37pm from MT Bunga Laurel. MISC called Bunga Laurel by phone but there were no response from the vessel,” said Adm Abdul Aziz.

“At exactly 11.40pm, Bunga Mas 5 called MISC ERC to report that Bunga Laurel had been attacked and pirates were attempting to board the ship by using skiffs. A suspected mothership was also reported in the vicinity.

“The 23 crewmen managed to assemble in the citadel (engine room). All lights were switched off and the main engines disabled,” he said, adding that the pirates’ attempt to barge into the citadel failed.

The commando team in two boats, led by Lt-Komander Maznan Said and Lt Noor Asri Roslan, were dispatched from Bunga Mas 5, located 14 nautical miles (25.9km) away, at 1.20am.

At the same time, the navy’s Fennec attack helicopter piloted by Lt Jason Solomon John provided reconnaissance and aerial cover.

Gunshots were exchanged between the pirates from the Bunga Laurel and snipers from the Bunga Mas 5 and helicopter. The pirates’ mothership attempted to move closer to Bunga Laurel but was thwarted.

Eventually, after taking heavy fire from Bunga Mas 5 and the helicopter, the pirates decided to surrender via radio. All the pirates were captured. Three pirates suffered injuries from gunshots or splinters and given first aid, but no Malaysians were injured.

The Malaysians are regulars and has a pretty good track record whereas SAF are paper tigers. Whilst the former are professional soldiers, the latter is good only as a career path towards rich rewards as a politician. How many paper generals we have in our midst? Fighting a physical enemy is different from fighting imaginary foes. Our generals win paper wars and get medals for their loyalty to their political masters. Forget about defending the nation, as the pocket is mightier than the sword.

Even the best equipped armed forces cannot win a war when the battle has already been lost in the hearts and minds of the soldiers. The Vietnam War is a very good example of how the might of the US army was beaten by a poorly equipped North Vietnamese Volunteers, who often resort to primitive but effective means against the US soldiers. Minister Mentor has already said we are still not there yet as a nation, whereas the Malaysians are fiercely patriotic.

The march of the Singaporeans towards nationhood has suffered a severe blow with the recent influx of foreigners. With more foreigners expected to boost the population, there will be less desire for Singaporeans to want to die for their country.

Same goes for the intelligence services up north. Never underestimate them. Though not as 'intellectual' as our two main agencies, their ground knowledge is miles ahead of ours. We are only good when not tested.

When tested severely, we will only embarass ourselves. The root cause of this is because we place all emphasis on 'paper credentials' and we then have the blind leading the blind.

Agree with you. Why bother to fight when the jobs are taken away from your family and friends. The Elite will happily send their families to their second home in a western country while our men will turn up half hearted and not knowing if is all going to be worth it.

Spot on. Their ground knowledge is excellent. We are good at technicals. Their Special Branch is attached in every station and people know who they are except for those running covert ops. Here our chaps are invisible that they cannot be reached.

The clowns did not know that half the senior lawyers were chatting to Hank Hendrickson and his crew at Robinson Road on a regular basis. They only found out by fluke.

I was once told very clearly that the priority of SID is to deliver first class qualitative reports to the old man. They actually thought it was their goal.

In one of the biggest debacle in modern history is the paper that was put up and went all the way to top and circulated as secret on the presidential candidate Obama and why he could not be elected.
