PETALING JAYA: A seafood restaurant supervisor claimed trial at the Johor Bahru magistrates’ court today to a charge of drink-driving after allegedly crashing into a traffic policeman at the scene of an earlier accident last week.

Ng Wee Long, 34, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him before judge Nur Fatin Farid in Mandarin via an interpreter, Berita Harian reported.

Ng was accused of driving a Proton Wira while under the influence of alcohol and injuring a traffic policeman at KM3.6 Jalan Pantai heading towards Permas Jaya at 7.05am on July 14.
The charge was framed under Section 44(1A)(b) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a penalty of up to 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to RM50,000. The accused could also have his driving licence suspended and be prohibited from applying for a new one for up to seven years, if found guilty.

Johor traffic prosecutor S Vikineswary asked for bail to be set at RM15,000 with one surety, and for Ng’s driving licence to be suspended pending the disposal of the case.
Vikineswary also requested that Ng report to a nearby police station once a month.
The court fixed bail at RM9,000 with one surety, along with the other conditions proposed by the prosecution.
The court set Aug 25 for re-mention and the submission of documents as well as the appointment of a defence lawyer.

On July 14, Bernama reported that the officer was directing traffic after an accident when a car veered into the right lane at the scene and hit him.

Johor Bahru Selatan district police chief Raub Selamat said the impact sent the victim crashing on the front windscreen of the car and falling in the middle of the road. The officer, in his 30s, suffered a fractured left hip bone and injuries to his face, chin and right hand.
The driver meanwhile was injured on his left hand. He also tested positive for alcohol.
