It's the hand-out mentality the government provides to so-called bumiputras, weakening Malaysia as a consequence.
Residents Fed Up Of Constant Water, Electricity Disruptions
The situation has been made worse by selfish residents who won’t pay their monthly bills, leaving huge amounts owed to utility services such as Syabas.
Residents of Taman Megah Apartments had to endure constant electricity and water disruptions, as most of the units at the 213-unit apartment in Kepong are rented out by landlords who refuse to pay for maintenance and utilities.
Muhammad Yusuf Din, treasurer of the apartment’s Joint Management Body (JMB), said that the last water interruption in June lasted for over a week, reported The Star.
“Supply only resumed after we managed to pay Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) RM8,000,” he said, noting that they still owe Syabas around RM14,000.
“We are facing a similar issue with electricity supply.”
Out of the 70 or so units occupied, around 30 households are inconsistent with their payments, while another 15 refuse to pay anything, said Muhammad Yusuf.
“Facilities on the premises are in a state of disrepair.”
An owner-resident, who wished to be identified only as Mageswary, said it was wrong for rule-abiding residents to suffer for the acts of irresponsible tenants and landlords.
“The water cut occurs often. We are quite confused as to why some of us who are actually paying our monthly bills are being made to suffer,” she said.
“Whenever there is a water cut, I have to travel some distance to my sister’s house to get water or buy from shops.”
Yee Poh Ping, Kepong Community Service Centre head, said majority of the units were rented out to foreign workers.
“The situation has been made worse by selfish residents who won’t pay their monthly bills, leaving huge amounts owed to utility services such as Syabas,” he said.
Owner-residents who have volunteered to help with collecting utility payments were facing an uphill battle.
“They are trying their best to urge those who owe money to settle their debts. It is not easy because a majority of the owners are refusing to cooperate.”
“The owners who have rented out their flats are not bothered because they are not living here,” he noted.
But with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) Executive Director (Management) Datuk Mustafa Mohd Nor visiting the apartment last week, Yee is hopeful that the issues plaguing them would soon be resolved.
“The DBKL Commissioner of Building is looking into the arrears problem and we hope the authority will also look into the other problems faced by the residents,” said Yee.
