GEORGE TOWN: Police are on the hunt for the main suspect involved in a violent attack on a man in an incident in Bandar Baru, Air Itam, here last Sunday.

Northeast district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rozak Muhammad, said the man is identified as Ong Wei Loon, 36, or better known as Holy.

"We have made two arrests so far. We are now looking for the main suspect in the incident. We have every reason to believe that the main suspect could have fled from the state soon after the incident," he told reporters today.

Photos of the blood-soaked victim have since been uploaded by the whistleblower group, Edisi Siasat, on its Telegram page. There were slash wounds on his face and all over his body.

Abdul Rozak said initial investigations revealed the attack was due to a debt problem.

"We believe the main suspect had approached the 40-year-old victim to ask him to pay up his debt. We have yet to get the full picture and the investigation is still underway. It has nothing to do with Ah Long or gambling activities as speculated," he added, noting that the victim is in stable condition.

Abdul Rozak said the two men nabbed following the incident, aged 39 and 48, would be released on police bail as they were not involved in the attack.

Police have yet to recover the weapon used in the attack, believed to be a knife. The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code.
