BN OPERATIONS CENTRE BLAST: Improvised Explosive Device similar to the one used in the Boston Marathon bombing

NIBONG TEBAL: THE explosion which rocked the Nibong Tebal Barisan Nasional (BN) operations centre in Jawi here on Tuesday, was triggered by an improvised explosive device (IED), a bomb similar to the one used in the Boston Marathon bombing recently which claimed three lives and injured 100 others.

The only difference with the one which went off on Tuesday night, was the absence of shrapnel in the bomb which could have caused serious injuries to the public.

A 35-year-old BN worker, Zaidi Ramli, suffered a minor injury after his right leg was hit by a flying object from the garbage pile, where the bomb was planted.

State police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said the bomb was planted in a garbage pile behind the stage to trigger panic among the crowd, adding it was not meant to cause any physical harm to the people there.

He said a task force headed by state Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Mazlan Kesah had been formed to track down the culprits.

Abdul Rahim confirmed that the police Bomb Squad had detonated the second bomb, also an IED, found at the same site about 3am yesterday, four hours after the first bomb went off about 10m away behind the main stage.

He described the people who had made the bombs as professionals and that police were deploying all its resources to track down the culprits.

"The people responsible behind the attack were out to disturb the election campaign process," he said after visiting the scene yesterday.

Abdul Rahim said the second bomb, which was believed to be stronger that the first, was set to explode after the first one went off.

He said police would beef up surveillance at rallies in the state and urged political parties to improve safety at their respective ceramah as well.

The blast occurred when state Gerakan chairman Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan was delivering a speech before a crowd of more than 2,000 people.

The explosion created thick white smoke and a wave which was felt as far as 150m away.

However, Dr Teng managed to calm the crowd and carried on with his speech.

Present during the incident were state Umno chairman Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman, who is also the BN candidate for the Nibong Tebal parliamentary seat, his deputy Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir, BN candidate for the Jawi state seat, Tan Cheng Liang and state People's Progressive Party chairman Datuk Loga Bala Mohan.

Zaidi said his spirits remained high and vowed to continue helping the BN machinery after taking some rest.

Zaidi, who is also a member of Zainal Abidin's security team, said the doctors at Sungai Bakap Hospital had cleared him of any danger after they removed a piece of PVC which was embedded in his leg.

"I was told to take some rest and will be back to help the BN machinery as soon as possible," he said when Zainal visited him at his home in Kampung Lima Kongsi, Sungai Bakap here.

NIBONG TEBAL, April 25 – Three men aged between 25 and 41 have been arrested in connection with an explosion behind the Barisan Nasional’s (BN) Nibong Tebal operations centre here on Tuesday night.

The suspects were held in George Town, Bukit Mertajam and Nibong Tebal following intelligence and eyewitness accounts, said Penang Police Contingent Headquarters spokesman ACP Roslee Chik.

He said two of them were hauled up in Seberang Perai before the third suspect was picked up in George Town.

“The suspects’ links to political parties are being investigated. One of them has criminal a record relating to the use of explosives,” he told reporters here today.

Roslee said the suspects had been remanded for investigations under Section 6 of the Explosives Act 1957 which carries imprisonment up to seven years or a fine up to RM10,000 or both.

He said the police were also looking for several more suspects.

Meanwhile, Roslee advised political parties to apply for police permits for their political rallies to enable the police to secure the areas.

“The public should not be unduly worried on the security situation for the police have sufficient strength to maintain public order in the state,” he said.

The police have confirmed that explosive was a timed homemade bomb or an improvised explosive device made by professionals.

A 35-year-old Umno Youth member was injured on his shin by shrapnel in the 10.15pm explosion.

NIBONG TEBAL: Police found another explosive device at the site of a Barisan Nasional ceramah here where a late night blast on Tuesday injured a party worker.

Penang police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said the device was found after police closed off the area for investigation.

“The bomb squad managed to detonate it from afar using a bomb disposal robot some five hours later. The device had no shrapnel but it was designed to create a loud bang meant to frighten the crowd,” he said at the scene of the blast in Taman Jawi Jaya here yesterday.

He said the first blast was due to an improvised explosive device (IED) and not firecrackers as originally thought.

“We believe that the culprit behind this wanted to set off a second explosion after the first blast. We have set up a task force to investigate the incident,” he said, adding that it had so far recorded statements from seven witnesses in the case, which is being probed under Section 6 of the Explosives Act.

DCP Abdul Rahim said CCTV cameras installed near the site were not functioning.

During the incident, a Barisan worker was walking past a rubbish dump near the ceramah site when the explosion occurred, injuring him with a piece of plastic.

At the same time, Penang Gerakan chairman Datuk Teng Hock Nan was speaking at the ceramah which was attended by about 3,000 people.

Meanwhile, Zaidi Ramli, 35, who was injured in the first explosion, said he was determined to help Barisan despite being badly shaken up by the incident.

The Lima Kongsi Umno Youth chairman said he was thrown back by the blast and felt a sharp pain in his right calf.

“Blood started oozing out from my leg,” he said, adding that doctors at the Sungai Bakap Hospital later removed plastic shrapnel the size of a 20 sen coin from his leg.

“I was given seven stitches for my wounds. However, it won't deter me from helping Barisan win in the general election,” he said.

In IPOH, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar said he had directed state police chiefs to increase security at ceramah and asked all political parties to inform the authorities of their venues.

“This is to ensure that the authorities can take early preventive measures by checking out the premises before the event. I assure the public that we have everything under control and are using all elements within the police force to apprehend the culprit.

“I'm issuing a stern warning to the individual or group behind this irresponsible and unacceptable act to surrender before we catch you,” he said after visiting the Perak contingent headquarters yesterday.
