<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->I REFER to last Thursday's commentary, 'Relook maids' pay and benefits'.
It never crosses our minds that it is inhumane or unethical to require that a human being work 24 hours a day, seven days a week with no rest day - for even when a maid is sleeping, she is on call.
So long as Singaporeans refuse to look at this issue squarely and deal with it, we will always be a people without a soul. Our neighbours will always consider us selfish and exploitative, because that is what we are.
This nation cannot continue to measure itself by materialistic yardsticks alone, or we will end up not much better than the colonialists we hated not so long ago.
I look forward to a day when Singapore is considered the best place for foreign maids to work because they are treated with dignity and respect, part of the inalienable rights of any human being.
