Make Sentosa more cyclist-friendly

I WAS inspired to cycle to Sentosa after reading about the nature trails on the island.
I was surprised to find that there are almost no measures to cater to people who wish to do so.
Sentosa's website offers no information on entry for cyclists and the applicable charges.
I figured that the most logical route would be via the pedestrian walkway. But at the entry gate, I was turned away by an attendant, who said bicycles, even if pushed, are not allowed past the gate. This was because Resorts World Sentosa, which is on the other side of the gate, did not allow bicycles on its grounds.
The attendant advised me to use the main vehicular bridge.
I found this to be rather challenging as there are no bicycle lanes or road shoulders for cyclists. Traffic on the road, which has many bends, was heavy and comprised fast-moving cars, commercial vehicles and buses.
Upon entering Sentosa, I noticed that there are neither bicycle lanes on the main carriageways nor well-marked bicycle paths.
However, I did discover a few nature trails where bicycles are allowed and which are easy to negotiate. Sadly, these trails are not well publicised; there are no signs pointing them out to visitors.
There are several old and disused trails criss-crossing the island that can be developed into cycling routes, indicating Sentosa's potential as a cycling paradise.
It is a pity that the relevant authorities have not marketed the island as a destination for recreational cyclists.
The island should be made easily accessible for cyclists from the mainland, and perhaps even linked to the nearby park connectors from Mount Faber and Labrador Park to create a seamless experience.
It is time we make Sentosa more cyclist-friendly.

Sentosa is not for local folks like us. They are trying to squeeze every inch of space for commercial and residential development there. Better stick to Pulau Ubin before its gone also.

The name Sentosa translates as "peace and tranquility" in Malay (derived from Santosha in Sanskrit).

Sentosa was once known as Pulau Belakang Mati (Chinese: 绝后岛),which in Malay means the "Island (pulau) of Death (mati) from Behind (belakang)".

Had it still been called by its old name, no one would wanna go there!

Note the Chinese translation!

Showing off your knowledge of history or skill of googling? What has it got to do with making Sentosa more cyclist friendly?:oIo::biggrin:

Sentosa is too commercialised. Should consider one of the islands in the east.

Hydra (area 52 km2)

This Greek island has to compete with other more beautiful islands for tourist money, so it is interesting that they made this an island without cars.

The only transport is by donkey, mule, bicycle or foot.

Shit. I forgot to censor that.

No cars means no paparazzi? I have to rethink that.

I have never seen any nude blondes on the beach before no matter where I go. Not even Bondi Beach in Sydney. But the Bondi area is a nice place to live in, especially those houses on the cliff. Miss the place!

What Sentosa needs to do is to levy a $100 entry surcharge on all foreign work permit holders.

Thank you for politicizing the Travel folder...

On topic, i would love to see a Sentosa without cars. There are already so many modes of transport available and removing the biggest polluter will surely add value to that holiday island. Adding bicycle friendly features will be no challenge at all.
