First of all, I want to state that all forms of abuses are wrong and very cruel. They should not be condoned. The abusers must not go unpunished, including the latest case of a maid abusing a child.
Let's put the matter in perspective.
FAMILY MEMBERS OF AN EMPLOYER GETTING ABUSED
This is rare though it happens. Most maids are humble and fearsome. Moreover, employers have all the means and ways to protect their family members. A good example is the use of webcam, hiddencam etc to monitor the maid 24 by 7. Now you see this mad's abuse has been captured on camera and broadcast in the cyberspace and has gone all the way to the mainstream media. I am sure she will not escape punishment.
MAIDS GETTING ABUSED BY EMPLOYERS
Thousands and thousands of cases have been reported over the years. Whatever punishments meted out so far have not deter potential offenders. From dressed-down aunties to highly educated professionals, they all have experienced to torture their maids by scalding them with boiling water, hot irons, stuffing their private parts with a cucumber (reported in 1980's), feeding with faeces, starving them for weeks...... Educated and well-to-do SAF officers, main-stream media newscaster... certainly know the means and ways to torture helpless foreign maids. These employers know for sure that maids do not have avenue to record the punching, kicking, ironing, hot water scalding... of their employers. Maids do not know how to wire a webcam, hiddenCAM and other recording devices for harvesting evidence. However, some maids managed to run away from their prisons. That's when the rich professionals get nailed down by the law.
Remember, there are thousands of maids suffer in darkness and silence. Their cases were not exposed and reported. As mentioned, they do not have the avenue to capture and record evidence. Unlike the cunning employers, maids could not produce any videos to show the world their extreme suffering..... Guess what, these less privileged maids have to accept the fact that the world is unfair.
